The first round of the newly-introduced Croatian First Division for women’s U-15 and U-17 club teams was played on September 19 and 20. The competition was financed through the FIFA Forward Programme 2.0, and it includes 12 clubs per age category.
Clubs participating in the first season of this national competition will compete in a round-robin system, with the teams that earns the most points being awarded the title of champions, while the teams that end up in last place on their respective league table will be relegated to one of the three regional leagues that are to be introduced in the next season. Once the regional leagues are introduced, the three regional league winners will have a chance to place in the national league through a final qualifying tournament.

This newly-introduced competition follows in the footsteps of longstanding and successful national leagues for boys’ teams and it is another important aspect of HNS’s efforts to promote women’s football.

“With help from FIFA, we’ve recently upped our investments into women’s football and we’re already seeing significant results. We will continue to invest in this area of football, and especially in women’s youth teams. The women’s national U-15 and U-17 leagues have already started and will continue in the following seasons, and we’ve also introduced inter-country selection matches for U-14 and U-16 female players. The public awareness of women’s football has got to increase,” said HNS president Davor Šuker.
