Croatia has new football champions: Rijeka has ended Dinamo's 11-year dominance and won its first league title in history.
After gaining independence, Croatia has had only three different football champions: Dinamo Zagreb, Hajduk Split, and Zagreb. From Sunday, however, the list is expanded to four names.
Rijeka, led by Matjaž Kek, has defeated Cibalia Vinkovci 4:0 and won the league titule in the penultimate round, having five points over the second-placed defending champions Dinamo Zagreb.
Moreover, Rijeka awaits the Croatian Cup final, on 31 May against Dinamo Zagreb in Varaždin, in the quest to try and secure the double domestic crown.
"Miracles do happen sometimes. Rijeka has waited for this for a long time, and we dedicate the trophy to everyone who carries Rijeka in their hearts. Many have suffered throughout the years, but they have believed that one day the championship will come to Rijeka. We have had an excellent rival in Dinamo Zagreb, but trust me, I'm the happiest man alive", said Rijeka coach Kek.
Rijeka will represent Croatia in Champions League qualification next season. Hajduk Split and Osijek join Dinamo in Europa League qualification.
