Tomislav Svetina was born on September 5, 1969 in Zagreb, Croatia. He completed his primary and secondary education in the Croatian capital, and he studied law at the University of Zagreb.
Svetina developed his legal career through working in multiple law firms, after which he also headed his own firm. Between 2005 and 2012, he was a member of the management of the Croatian Lottery.
From 2012 to 2018, Svetina served as the general director of GNK Dinamo during a particularly successful time period for the club.
In addition to his work at GNK Dinamo, Svetina also actively participated in the work of the European Club Association (ECA), with his work there being especially focused on building dialogue between ECA and the international players’ union FIFPro.
He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Zagreb Sports Association since 2014, and in late 2018 he was elected as the president of the Zagreb Football Association, position for which he was re-elected in 2022.
He served as the vice-president of the Croatian Football Federation from 2017 to 2021, during which he was also a president of the HNS Regulations Committee.
At the proposal of HNS president Marijan Kustić, the Executive Committee of the HNS unanimously elected Svetina as the Croatian FA’s executive director on July 29, 2021. In April 2024, his position was renamed to General Secretary, to be aligned with FIFA and UEFA standards.
